Awards 2016
The Association for Gulf and Arabian Peninsula Studies (AGAPS) Evaluation Committee is pleased to announce that the 2016 Dissertation Award has been awarded to Marc Owen Jones for his dissertation: “Methods of Repression in Bahrain during the 20th and 21st Century: From the Civil List to Social Media” (Durham University, November 2015).
The dissertation presents a very rich analysis of the use of repression in Bahrain spanning several decades, including tribal resistance to the British reforms of the 1920s, the rise of the Higher Executive Committee in the 1950s, leftist agitation of the 1970s, the 1990s Intifada, and the 2001 Uprising. It is the first academic work devoted to analyzing and contextualizing different modes of repression throughout this history. The Evaluation Committee felt the dissertation was meticulously researched and clearly argued, and that it makes a highly significant contribution to our understanding of Bahraini history and wider political theory.
